Passing of Retired Brother Jesse Martinez, Jr.

IBEW Local Union 569 mourns the passing of our Retired Brother Jesse Martinez, Jr., who had just turned 68 years old.  Brother Martinez had been our member for 45 years, having been obligated into membership on February 1, 1977.

Jesse was a San Diego native and graduated from Kearny High School in 1972.  He would attend Mesa College, and then University of San Diego, to study Sociology.  It appears that his dad, longtime member Jesse Martinez, Sr., may have convinced young Jesse that the electrical industry would be the more promising way forward.  Jesse, Jr. began working as a Shopman in our manufacturing division (this was in the 70s).  After eight months, Jesse began in our apprenticeship program in the Fall of 1977.  He graduated as a Journeyman Wireman on August 1, 1981, and never looked back.

During his career path, Jesse took a break from working through Local 569, and worked for the City of San Diego for several years.  As the good Union Brother he was, Jesse always maintained his Local 569 membership.  Jesse was also a positive influence for the next generation, as he was the assistant coach for the Mira Mesa High girls’ softball team for several years.  He then became a volleyball referee.  Jesse would come into our office to share his many out-of-town competition events.  We will miss this kind and generous member, with a heart much bigger than the baseball diamonds on which he coached.
