IBEW Local 569 Community Partnerships

Our Local is committed to working with other diverse community, civic and environmental partners to grow a vibrant labor movement in San Diego, to improve working conditions and quality of life for all San Diego and Imperial County residents and to promote a cleaner, healthier environment. Our partnerships include:

Providing Middle-Class Careers for Returning Veterans
As participants in the Building Trades Helmets to Hardhats program, IBEW Local 569 provides returning veterans with a pathway into a middle-class career in the construction industry. Military personnel who have worked in an electrical or electronic “Military Occupational Specialty” in the armed services are able to enter our apprenticeship program through a special application process or be placed in Journey-level positions according to their skill level. This highly successful national program has placed veterans all over the country in skilled construction careers with family healthcare, pension retirement and excellent wages. For more information, please visit Helmets to Hardhats.

Achieving Energy Independence Through Green Union Jobs
The Apollo Alliance is a national coalition of labor, business, environmental, and community leaders working to catalyze a clean energy revolution that will put millions of Americans to work in a new generation of high-quality, green-collar jobs. IBEW Local 569 was one of the founding members of the San Diego Chapter and participates in the California State Apollo Alliance. Our Local remains committed to realizing an energy independent, cleaner future by creating thousands of green union jobs in San Diego and Imperial Counties’ new low-carbon economy. We’ve made this a priority in our daily organizing and policy work, as well as through continued partnership with environmental allies. For more information, please visit Apollo Alliance.

Renewable Energy Leadership Institute:
Creating the Next Generation of Clean Energy Leaders
IBEW Local 569, our San Diego Electrical Training Center and the San Diego Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association have teamed up with the San Diego Unified School District to launch the Renewable Energy Leadership Institute. A “new twist” on wood shop, this program allows high school students to attend classes at our IBEW 569 training center to learn about electricity, renewable energy and science principles hands-on in the classroom and the lab. Many of these students will attend college, while others will enter our IBEW 569 apprenticeship program. No matter which path they choose, these enthusiastic young students are on track to become the next generation of clean energy professionals. For more information, please contact Patrick Knighton.

“Green jobs and smart growth can revive San Diego’s economy and resolve some of our worst environmental problems.”

– Jerome Ringo,
former president and current board member of the
